The Foreign Languages Faculty’s Dean Pr. Mansouri Ibrahim, with the Head of English Language Department, Dr. Bessai Nesrine and a group of teachers from the same Department, received on February 18th, 2020 in the named Faculty’s head quarter an American delegation from Columbia University. The delegation was composed of five teachers specialised in “Applied Linguistics and English Language Didactics”, and representatives of the US Embassy of Algeria.
On his part, the Dean, Pr. Mansouri Ibrahim, gave a brief overview of the Faculty and its different departments and pointed to the last statistics of the students registered in English Department, Bachelor’s degree, Master and PhD. Besides, he noted that this Department undergoes a pressure because of the increasing number of students who want to register in it.
The teachers gave a general description of the units taught in bachelor’s degree and master and talk about the different specialties of the Department such as Literature, Civilisation, Linguistics and English Language Didactics.
Moreover, the two sides discussed about the Higher Education Minister’s project on generalising the English language in different universities and higher schools. They talked about the Department’s teachers’ role in training and supervising English teachers.
This cooperation may be realised by exchanging experiences and proposing a master in ESP (ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES) which trains English teachers in different fields (medicine, engineering, sciences, etc...).
At the end of the meeting, the delegation attended a course of American literature given by one of the Department’s teachers to the students of Master.
